Gmail Browser Support
Various articles cover the pending launch of Google’s Gmail email service. I looked at Gmail’s “about” page and was pretty suprised to see:
5. What are Gmail’s system requirements?
Gmail currently supports the following browsers:
- Microsoft IE 5.5 and newer (Windows)
- Netscape 7.1 and newer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
- Mozilla 1.4 and newer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
- Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and newer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
Regardless of the browser used, you must have JavaScript and cookies enabled. We hope to expand this list of supported browsers in the near future. To get updates on our progress with Gmail, add your email address using the form at the bottom of this page.
No IE 5.0 support? No Safari or Opera support? No IE 5.0 support!?!
How might this change our thoughts and approach?
Please add your thoughts in the comments section below.

It seems that gmail will not allow for “Quick Contacts” to be added (and thus the chat feature enables) under any browser OTHER THAN Firefox. Can anyone confirm or refute this?
Also, it seems that, even with Firefox, it is impossible to enter Jabber conferences (groupchats) even though gmail is supposed to be the on the jabber protocol. And in fact this seems to be the case, for from any jabber client/server you can see people signed on gmail. You just can’t invite them into groupchats (or rather you can invite them, they just won’t get the invitation), nor can they invite themselves into same.
