U.S. Tops Mexico 2-0 to Reach World Cup - Yahoo! News
Qualifying for the World Cup is sweet. Doing it against your archrival is nirvana. The United States is headed to next year’s soccer championship in Germany after beating Mexico 2-0 Saturday night thanks to goals by Steve Ralston and DaMarcus Beasley five minutes apart in the second half.

Woo Hoo! Unfortunately, not many Americans even know about the up-coming World Cup, or that we’re in it!

Back in the sixties I played soccer in Vermont and remember wondering if the US would ever win the World Cup in my life time. Beating Mexico is huge for our guys and it’s possible this year we may get a lot closer to winning in Germany. bk

I think our country has a vast untapped potential. It’s just that we don’t have the widespread grassroots support for the sport here. While I’m pulling for team USA as much as any fan, I am realistic. The home team has come a long way since about ‘92-’94 when there was a kind of explosion in interest in soccer, but I don’t think we’re quite ready to take on Brazil and the like. It’s rare that you hope you’re wrong, isn’t it?!
